Base Currency

The first 3 letters are the symbol for the base currency. Here, EUR is the base and USD is the quote currency.

Base Currency

In a currency quote the base currency is the one that comes first. So with EUR/USD, the base currency is EUR. With USD/JPY, the base is USD.

When you're looking at a currency quote, it's telling you how many of the quote currency it will take to buy 1 of the base. So, if USDJPY = 80, you will need 80 JPY to buy 1 USD.
